Renowned diplomat Masood Khan nominated as AJK Presedent

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in consultation with Azad Kashmir Prime Minister Raja Farooq Haider has nominated Pakistan permanent representative to United Nations Masood Khan as the party’s candidate for the AJK president slot.
In the same meeting, the AJK cabinet members were also finalised and the names would be announced later by the AJK Prime Minister.
The elections for the slot of AJK President would be held on August 16 when newly elected AJK Legislative members would elect the new President. The nomination papers for the slot could be filed by 11th of this month.
In the first meeting after his elections as AJK Prime Minister here in Islamabad, Raja Farooq Haider presented the list of the AJK cabinet members to him which were finalised after detailed discussion by the MML-N AJK Parliamentary Party.
Sources aware of the deliberations of the meeting between the two prime ministers informed that Premier Sharif approved all the names without making any change in it and said that the decision about the AJK would be decided by the elected people from the area.
In the decision of finalising the name of party candidate for the AJK President slot, the party decision was given credence, a source said.
The party sources say that after the announcement of the AJK President election’s schedule a number of veteran politicians started lobbying. Prominent among those trying to capture the priced slot included former AJK Prime Minister and President Sardar Sikandar Hayat Khan, JK PP President Sardar Khalid Ibrahim, Masood Khan, former AJK minister Najeeb Naqi and former AJK Chief Justice Manzoor Hussain Gillani.
The decision to pick Masood Khan for the slot was made keeping in view his vast diplomatic experience and his ability to highlight the Kashmir issue at international level in an effective manner.
According to a press release issued by the PM’s media wing, the prime minister, talking to AJK Prime Minister Raja Farooq Haider, said that the federal government would ensure all possible assistance to the elected government of Azad Jammu and Kashmir in its pursuit to improve the state of affairs.
Congratulating Raja Farooq Haider on his election as the prime minister AJK, Nawaz expressed the confidence that the newly elected government would tirelessly work for the progress and prosperity of the people of AJK.
“The people have overwhelmingly shown their trust in our manifesto and now it is our collective responsibility to serve them. Developmental and infrastructure projects must be proactively pursued and completed so that the people of AJK get the benefits of our developmental agenda,” the press release quoted the Prime Minister as having said.
Prime Minister Sharif said that merit and transparency must be maintained in the award and fulfilment of all public sector projects.
All developmental projects must aim at improving the life standard of the people, he added.
Better communication and roads networks would certainly open up the most beautiful areas of AJK to the world and enhance the economic activities in that region, he added.
The Prime Minister said, “We are enormously grateful to the people for their confidence, it is now our responsibility to perform and deliver.”
Minister for Information and Broadcasting Pervaiz Rashid and Special Assistant to PM Dr Asif Kirmani were also present during the meeting.
Farooq Haider assured that the newly elected government of AJK would initiate all necessary steps to implement the leadership’s vision in true letter and spirit. PR
