NA Speaker lauds EU support for strengthening Pak democratic institutions

ISLAMABAD: National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq said that Pakistan attached high importance to its relations with the European Union (EU) which were deep-rooted in bonds of friendship, cooperation and mutual understanding on various issues.
He was talking to EU Ambassador Jean Francois Cautain, who called on him here at the Parliament House.
The Speaker appreciated the EU support for the strengthening of democratic process and institutions in Pakistan. The political leadership of Pakistan envisioned a long-term strategic partnership with the EU with special emphasis on strengthening of economic and trade partnership, peace and security and parliamentary cooperation.
“We are standing parallel in the row that commits to the pursuit of democracy, economic development, peace globally and in particular in South Asia,” the Speaker said.
He also mentioned that today many Pakistanis had found a home in Europe and were valued members of their societies, some of them had become members of their parliaments.
Sardar Ayaz Sadiq informed the ambassador about the National Assembly’s Strategic Plan aiming at capacity building of the members of the Parliament as well as the secretariat staff, besides converting the House into e-Parliament with paperless, green and eco-friendly environment.
Ambassador Jean Francois Cautain appreciated the remarks of the Speaker and said the EU would continue its unwavering support to Pakistan for the development of infrastructure, gender equality, education and health.
He also assured the Speaker for assistance to the Parliament through its programmes including strengthening democracy and capacity building of parliamentarians and secretariat staff. Agencies
